Letter of introduction for Jacopo Baboni Schilingi
The Groupe de Recherches Musicales of INA [GRM] has known the composer and teacher Jacopo Baboni Schilingi for more than fifteen years. We have had the opportunity to work with him many times on creative projects, university teaching sessions and study seminars on questions relating to music, its analysis and its philosophical dimension. We have also collaborated regularly with the various centres and ensembles with which he has worked, notably the Tempo Reale Centre in Italy and the Prisma ensemble in France.
Jacopo Baboni Schilingi has an unusual profile for a musician, given his experience and excellence in the fields he approaches. As a composer, he has created a language with a strong personality, combining technical mastery and compositional writing. He has created three works at GRM, all of which were received enthusiastically by audiences; the Prisma ensemble has also presented works in this context.
In teaching, he has collaborated for more than ten years on the master’s programme in electroacoustic music analysis that GRM develops with Université Paris IV-Sorbonne, and, since 2010, on the master’s programme in Acousmatic Music and Sound Arts with Université de Marne-la-Vallée. In both cases, student feedback has always been excellent, particularly regarding his view of the importance of technology in artistic creation and how to combine modernity and compositional writing in this field.
He has contributed to several seminars on the philosophy of music, its relationship with other disciplines and how to think about music in a technological context. He had already pursued these research activities at the Tempo Reale Centre in Italy, where he also developed substantial educational activity, and he brings a renewed and original perspective to musical thought.
He is also responsible for the Prisma ensemble, where, through exchange and dialogue, he has put into practice a new approach to contemporary instrumental creation. Jacopo Baboni Schilingi’s strength lies in his attentiveness and availability to others, enabling them to understand and analyse working possibilities and prospects together. In this respect, he has an excellent managerial profile, capable of bringing a project to fruition through dialogue and persuasion.
In conclusion, it is important to emphasise his outstanding human qualities and the new ideas he is capable of bringing to music and the musical world.
